Why Your Roof Underlayment Is Important

The shingles on your roof are only part of what makes up your roof. A roof is a comprehensive system of interconnected layers. Some homeowners are unfamiliar with the hidden parts of a roofing system, such as the underlayment. Even though some of the parts are unseen, each component serves a crucial function in keeping your home protected.

Here’s why your roof needs underlayment.

Weather Protection

Your shingles are designed to endure wind, reflect ultraviolet (UV) rays and keep water from penetrating the roof. However, because shingles overlap, they can be blown off by strong winds and become susceptible to water infiltration if they are not installed properly. If a strong wind dislodges your shingles, your underlayment will act as a barrier that will prevent snow, ice and precipitation from penetrating the roof deck and your attic. Until the shingles are fixed or replaced, the underlayment will provide the necessary protection.

Prevention of Ice and Water Damage

Ice or snow dams can exert pressure on a roof. When snow or ice on your roof melts, water can seep into the holes on your roof, creating leaks that could later lead to water damage and mold growth inside your home. The water-resistant underlayment ensures that water drains from the roof and seals around the frame.

Moisture Protection

Rain and snow trapped under the shingles can lead to water damage, leaks, mold and rot on the deck and within your home. Roofing underlayment adds a layer of protection that shingles alone cannot give.

Fire Safety

Roof shingles alone cannot meet the Class A fire rating. Certain types of underlayment can help your roof meet industry standards and provide enough fire resistance that will be instrumental in minimizing damage to your home.
