What Are the Consequences of Poor Attic Ventilation?

Cooking, running the dishwasher, showering and doing other daily activities generate heat and moisture that rise to your attic. With sufficient ventilation, warm, humid air can effortlessly escape your home. However, if your attic lacks good airflow, you’ll end up facing serious issues in different parts of your house.

Here’s what happens if your attic has poor ventilation.

Mold and Mildew Growth

A highly humid attic makes the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew. Mold can create unsightly stains on surfaces and harm the health of your household. Its spores can cause allergic reactions and trigger asthma attacks. Keeping your attic well-ventilated helps maintain good indoor air quality and your family healthy.

Ice Dams

In winter, ice dams form due to trapped heat in your attic. They are the ridges of ice that settle along the roof’s edge. The presence of ice dams will prevent snow melt from draining from your roof. As a result, ice will continue to accumulate, and water can seep beneath the shingles, causing leaks into your interior.

Short Roof Lifespan

Maintaining good attic ventilation can delay the need for a roof replacement. If warm air doesn’t have anywhere to go to, the temperature in your attic will increase, speeding up the deterioration of shingles and underlayment. Significant granule loss and cracked shingles are common indications of insufficient attic and roof ventilation.

HVAC Issues

Besides your roof, poor attic ventilation can also compromise your heating and cooling system. It will then need to exert more effort to reach your desired temperature. The increased load can result in higher energy consumption and strain your HVAC components.
