5 Mistakes That Shorten Your Roof’s Lifespan

A roofing system can withstand various elements and the changing seasons. It will, however, eventually deteriorate due to long-term exposure to these factors, but it can last for decades depending on the material. Roof maintenance is key to prolonging a roof’s lifespan, but it also helps to be aware of the common mistakes that could shorten it.

Make sure to avoid these five errors so that you can get the best out of your roof for several years.

Not Cleaning the Gutters

Leaves, pine needles and small branches can fill your gutters and clog them up. This can cause a significant amount of water in your gutters to back up to your shingles and potentially cause leaks and underlayment damage. That said, make sure to clean your gutters regularly. You might also want to add gutter protection during your next gutter installation project so that you can prevent dirt and debris buildup.

Neglecting to Trim Trees

Your roof can suffer from severe damage if overgrown tree branches scratch against its surface. Strong winds can also break off branches, which could damage your shingles. Make sure to trim surrounding trees, especially before a storm, to avoid such issues. If possible, remove the trees completely, especially if they’re too near your home.

Allowing Moss and Algae to Grow on Shingles

Algae and mold can grow on shingles if they’re in the shade or retain moisture from fallen leaves. The enzymes can digest the shingle granules, diminishing the protective layer of your roof. Call up a residential roofing specialist to help you get rid of the moss and algae safely. Typically, spraying the affected area with a bleach and water mixture does the trick.

Failing to Inspect the Roof After a Storm

Always have your roof checked for wind damage after a storm. Strong winds can dislodge shingles and cause misalignment, clawing or cupping that’s barely noticeable. A professional inspection will save your roof from more extensive damage and prolong its lifespan.

Not Scheduling Regular Roof Maintenance

Regular inspections ensure that your roof can handle the challenges of any season. Generally, roof inspections should be done twice a year. Neglecting roof upkeep can surprise you with the expensive costs of emergency repairs or premature roof replacement.
