Common Gutter Problems: How the Experts Can Fix Them

It’s normal for gutter issues to show up at some point since gutter materials age or can get damaged due to a severe storm. Some of the issues that homeowners typically deal with are clogging, leaks and sagging. If these problems aren’t resolved in time, they could create further damage to your home. In some cases, roof replacement or foundation repair becomes necessary.

To avoid such major issues, you should call a professional to repair your gutters as soon as the first signs of the problem occur.

Clogging

Clogging typically occurs in the elbows of gutter sections because debris can easily accumulate in these parts. To solve this problem, your gutter contractors may have to take the sections apart so that they can thoroughly clean out the debris. For a long-term solution, though, it’s best to ask your contractor to add gutter protection, which can keep the debris out of your gutter system.

Leaks

Leaks are often located in the joints between the gutter sections. They are also typically a symptom of the gutter system’s failure to drain water properly. If the gutters are unable to drain water and keep it flowing out of the downspouts, the water could seep through the seams. That said, gutter repair experts will need to look for standing water or signs of sagging to determine the cause of the leak. Addressing these issues is important to ensure that your gutters won’t leak again. But apart from that, your contractor will also apply silicone or a special gutter caulking compound on the seams to seal the leaks properly.

Sagging

Sagging is the result when the gutters are full of water because they are unable to drain properly. The weight of the water can be too heavy for the gutters, causing them to bend and sag. The hangers may also become loose, too. To determine the appropriate fix for your gutters, experts usually check for standing water or water marks on the inside of the gutters. They also have to make sure that the slope of your gutter system is correct. Once they have figured out the cause of the sagging, they can replace the hangers or reseat them.
